New preventive medical checkups
There is a large gap between the U9 (at age 5) and J1 (at age 12) checkups. For this reason, the German Association of Pediatricians and Adolescents, together with recognized experts in developmental neurology and adolescent medicine, developed new preventive examinations in 2006.
On the one hand, this involves physical examinations from head to toe, including vision and hearing screening, and on the other, clarification of movement and speech development, social and emotional development. The screenings are prepared using standardized questionnaires. In addition, if necessary, there are discussions about social or psychological areas such as school, media consumption, exercise behavior, weight problems, risk of addiction, relationships and sexuality.
The time limits for the new screenings are:
U10: at age 7-8 (1st day before 9th birthday).
U11: with 9-10 years (1st day before 11th birthday)
J2: with 16-17 years (1st day before 18th birthday)
Many health insurance companies already cover the costs through special contracts. Private health insurance companies already pay for one screening examination per year up to the 14th birthday.
